Botox Treatments by Dentists

By Erin O'breen

Whether wishing to make an improvement in appearance for medical reasons, or because of a personal issue, specially trained medical staff are available to deliver Botox injections for these purposes. There are rather stringent guidelines on who should be allowed to inject botox injection, with the overall suggestion being that a trained doctor should be performing them. Injections may also be delivered by other certified medical professionals like nurses, when a doctor is supervising.

Recently, there has been some discussion as to whether dentists can prescribe and administer botox injections. State laws are part of what determines the answer to these questions, among other things.

We will examine this in closer detail.

Which are the points in question?

All medical professionals who administer botox treatments must receive the specialized training, including dentists. While these treatments are not extremely complicated like some procedures such as brain surgery, an elaborate knowledge of the anatomy is essential to deliver the injections safely and effectively. The certified practitioner must be able to treat and reduce the side effects that sometimes come with treatments.

Dentists are generally approved to inject and prescribe botox after they have completed the training for this procedure.

Dentists performing botox treatments

At this time, dentists are approved for botox injections in most states in America. There is a difference between standard injections for cosmetic reasons, and the way botox is administered. To illustrate this, botox can be injected for the treatment of myofascial conditions and is covered by a dental plan as allowed by the Dental Board of California. It is not however legal for a dentist to use botox to treat cosmetic issues. Administering it for this reason involves the Facial Cosmetic Surgery Permit to approve of the procedure. Board approved courses are taught in some states like Georgia, they lay out the exact specifications of administering the toxin, and the different types available and of course rigorous review of the anatomy of the face.

Dentists who have completed the necessary training involved for cosmetic injection are newly allowed because of approval from the Massachusetts Board of Dentistry in that state.

Since states have their own separate rules on this subject, patients should do their own research into whether their dentist is permitted to administer these treatments. Treatments of botox for cosmetic reasons seem to becoming more accepted for cosmetic purposes by dentists lately.

The arguments in question

Allowing dentists to administer botox to treat cosmetic issues has people debating if this should be approved. There are those who feel that dentists do not have the same level of knowledge of facial anatomy as plastic surgeons have, and talk is happening on medical forums about this topic. This concurs with some of the state board's guidance of dentists only using botox for dental related procedures.

Not surprisingly, if you were to ask a dentist, they would say that they are qualified to deliver botox injections due to their specialized training in maxillofacial and facial anatomy, making them more than qualified. It would appear that this argument will continue on for years to come.

Summary

Botox injections are becoming ever more popular with the demand exceeding the number of personnel able to administer the drug. Dentists are now getting approved to provide botox treatments with state boards issuing new guidelines constantly.
