Chemical Peels for Acne Treatment

By Marlene Ataine

Although for some it is mild with only a few pimples or "zits" occurring every so often, almost every teenager has suffered acne at some point. In more severe cases though, the acne can be a variety of spots called whiteheads or blackheads, or even worse they can be large red, inflamed spots termed cysts. These skin pimples, spots and cysts can change the tone of the skin, leaving a darker tone and severe acne can in some cases leave scarring.

Although acne does not pose any danger, it can result in scarring of the skin. The pores (tiny holes) in human skin are connected to oil glands underneath it. The glands are connected to the pores via follicles - small canals. Sebum is an oily liquid produced by these glands. The sebum carries dead skin cells through the follicles to the surface of the skin. From the follicle, out of the skin, a small hair grows. Oil accumulates under the skin when these follicles get blocked, resulting in pimples. Hormonal changes during puberty can result in more oil in the skin, so this is why many teenagers have acne. Adults can also develop acne later on in life, which is called adult acne, so it's not just teenagers who suffer from acne.

For some adults, breakouts are a result of hypersensitivity or overproduction of androgens (male hormones). Another common cause of breakouts is an imbalance in both male and and female hormones called estrogen. During pregnancy, perimenopause, and menopause, this can happen to women. Occasionally, some cosmetics or medications like corticosteroids can also cause acne to develop.

To help alleviate mild and moderate adult acne, chemical peels are a very good treatment. Chemical peels work by exfoliating the skin; dirt is cleansed from the skin, and dead skin cells which are clogging the pores are removed. This causes fewer acne pimples and spots to form. Skin discolouration and uneven skin tone caused by acne may also be helped by chemical peels.

For acne treatment, chemical peels are a very cost effective option. This acne treatment is also very safe. The top layers of the skin are exfoliated and cleansed by superficial chemical skin peels that remove all the dead skin cells. A course of six peels is usually recommended, each performed at least one week apart. With this method, you will notice the skin texture improves and the amount of acne breakouts is visibly reduced.

Make sure to approach a credible skin care clinic for your chemical peel acne treatment. Before embarking on treatment with chemical peels for acne, it is important to consult a reputable clinic to obtain advice on how the chemical peel treatment will benefit your skin type.
